Give HASHI a Try
Chopsticks, or HASHI, play three roles, taking the place of a knife, fork, and spoon. They are also useful as cooking utensils in the kitchen. Most are made of wood and about 20 centimeters long. Longer ones are used for cooking.
The right way to hold HASHI (if you are right-handed) is as follows.
  1. Rest the HASHI pointing left across the upward-facing palm of your right hand.
  2. Support them from below with your left hand.
  3. Rest the handle of the nearer one in the crook of your thumb, and pinch the handle of the other lightly between the tip of your thumb and the middle knuckle of your index finger.
  4. Curl your ring and pinky fingers loosely under the nearer HASHI, and rest the tip of your middle finger against the farther HASHI.
  5. Using the tip of your thumb as a pivot for the farther HASHI, you can use your index and middle fingers to bring the tips of the HASHI together. Does it sound complicated? Well, you'll get used to it quickly, and will find HASHI to be very convenient for cutting, mixing, separating, and picking up even the smallest pieces of food. It's definitely worth a try.
